Leaders Who Will Win in 2009

Legendary coach John Wooden never cared about the score. The fact that the former UCLA Bruins coach enjoyed the most successive wins in college basketball history makes that hard to believe. But Wooden, a man of immaculate character, set his steely focus on something more important - teaching his players how to win in life using his proven Pyramid of Success. Winning games was simply a byproduct of his larger mission. How can you make winning a byproduct of your actions in 2009?

Unlike Wooden, most business and marketing leaders do care about the score. Our scoreboards are:

  • Earnings
  • Market share
  • Sales revenue
  • Brand awareness
  • Leads
  • And more
  • Can Wooden's success pyramid provide the same level of success for us in business as it did for him in sports? After all, no Board member or investor ever asked for a report on the metrics of enthusiasm, team spirit and poise.

The fact is that Wooden's success pyramid will work for any team, whether you're a start-up, large enterprise or government agency. And the reason is because it's people-based and a proven formula for getting people performing at their peak.

2009 will be fraught with intense competition and you can use these principles to help your team thrive and deliver championship performance in this new environment. This is the year that the mediocre will shrink away and the strong and prepared will grab market share.

Since 2009 is all about the team, take some time this month to take inventory of yours. How skilled are they? How competitive are they? How industrious and enthusiastic are they? How alert are they to what's happening in the marketplace? Do they have a fire-in-the-belly for your organization/division/department? You can have a major impact on all of these things.

And remember, your team isn't limited to your employees. Be sure to evaluate and leverage the strengths of your entire bench including your advisors, your agencies, and your vendors. When you have the right team in place, applying Wooden's Pyramid of Success could be the magic that turns you (and them) into the shining stars of 2009.

PowerMark ascribes to Wooden's philosophy and would be pleased to partner with you and your team in generating critical wins this year. Ping us and let's talk. Wishing you a healthy, happy and bountiful New Year!
